BMI Calculator

BMI, or body mass index, is a simple screening measure that relates body weight to height. The BMI Calculator provides the numerical BMI and can help you understand where the result falls within commonly used adult BMI categories.

BMI formula

When weight is in kilograms and height is in meters, BMI = weight ÷ height². For pounds and inches, the equivalent formula is BMI = (weight × 703) ÷ height².

Using the calculator

Enter your weight and height using the units requested. Check that the height has not been entered as a total number of inches when the calculator expects feet and inches, or vice versa.

Interpreting BMI

For adults, commonly used screening ranges classify BMI below 18.5 as underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 as normal weight, 25.0 to 29.9 as overweight, and 30.0 or higher as obesity. BMI does not directly measure body fat or account for every difference in body composition.
